Hotels are often thought of as playgrounds of the rich. But in Karongi, perched directly on the shores of Lake Kivu, Bethany Hotel insists otherwise. Every visitor is served according to their means, the management says, with prices designed to welcome, not exclude.
The hotel has gone further. Tour guides who bring in a group of at least ten visitors are rewarded with a free night’s stay. If those same visitors dine at Bethany, their guide too is invited to eat at no cost.
Birthdays are not overlooked: those who celebrate at Bethany receive a reserved space for their guests, while the celebrant arranges only the food and drinks.
Newlyweds, too, are honoured. Couples beginning life together are granted a 15% discount on their room rates throughout their honeymoon.

Visitors find more than just a bed. They encounter a garden alive with birdsong, the fresh breath of trees, and the stillness of Kivu’s breeze.
One may order fish — freshly caught, prepared on the spot, including the lake’s famed isambaza also caught fresh.
Everyday a buffet is laid sharp midday. And all the time Breakfast, hearty and generous, is served with the care reserved for royalty.
The prices, compared to Rwanda’s larger cities, are modest: the most expensive room is 80,000 Rwandan francs per night (about $65), while the lowest is 35,000 (about $28).
Furthermore, Ntwali Janvier, says that for those who come as a group, the management often reduces costs further.
