‘It was very depressing’: Shania Twain

She previously cited her painful divorce to Mutt Lange – who cheated on her with her best friend – for sidelining her music career for 15 years.  And Shania Twain, who is the best-selling female artist in the history of country music, has now detailed her ‘debilitating’ battle with Lyme disease – which also slowed down her music career after it caused her to ‘lose her voice.’

After releasing her last album in 2002, Shania disappeared from the limelight and has since blamed her crushing marriage woes to Lange as the reason why, and most recently her devastating battle with Lyme disease

The 51-year-old famed singer also reflected on her failed marriage to the record producer – heartbreakingly claiming that when the ‘marriage fell away, so did the musical collaboration.’

The five-time Grammy winner rose to number one on the Billboard charts with the release of her last album Up! in 2002.

Soon after that she disappeared from the limelight – blaming her crushing marriage woes to Lange as the reason why, and most recently her devastating battle with Lyme disease.

Revealing all about the health condition in a candid new interview with The Sun’s Bizarre life podcast: ‘I lost my voice for several years and I could speak but I couldn’t yell. I could never yell for my dog or my son or whatever.’

Speaking of the disease, which is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks, Shania admitted it was ‘depressing’ – however she found solace in her ‘first love’ – writing.

The That Don’t Impress Me Much hitmaker, who then spent ‘several years getting her voice back on track’, also confessed that looking back she thought she would never be able to release another album again.

However, that is not the case as she is set to release new music with her upcoming album Now – which is set to be a moneymaker just like her previous endeavours.

The new album will be Shania’s fifth overall, following up Shania Twain (1993), The Woman in Me (1995), Come On Over (1997) and Up!

While Shania’s health was taking a turn for the worse, so was her love life – as after fifteen years of marriage, she found out that her best friend Marie-Anne Thiebaud was having an affair with her husband Mutt.

It was Marie-Anne’s husband Frederic Thiebaud that told the Man! I Feel Like a Woman songstress – who has sold over 85 million records – about the infidelity.

Looking back on the low point of her life, the brunette innocently revealed: ‘I thought that marriage was forever. I really, really believed that. I thought, “I’m safe. This creative relationship is forever”. And I really counted on that.’

Ironically, after both couples separated in 2010, Twain and Frederic found solace with each other and have been happily married since 2011.

Speaking of Frederic, Shania admitted that she wasn’t going to ‘die’ after the divorce and ‘was lucky to find love again’

Twain has worked with new producers Jake Gosling, Ron Aniello, Jacquire King, and songwriter-producer Matthew Koma for her new material.

In a previous interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the star admitted that the stress of her divorce from her husband – who she shares son Eja, 15, with inspired her to write a new album after a long absence.

‘I’ve learned a lot about myself, she told the publication, adding: ‘It’s scary to learn how vulnerable you can be.’

Explaining ballad Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl? from her new album which is due for release in May, the Canadian-native revealed: ‘It’s about feeling unappreciated and knowing that you are secondary. Having to live with someone that has different priorities and accepting that you’re not the most important thing in a person’s life.’

‘Another song, Swinging With My Eyes Closed, is about fighting back against pain. ‘The fighter in me wrote that song,’ she told them, ‘I was thinking of a boxer taking a swing, or a baby first coming out with his eyes and fists closed. They can’t even see yet and they’re swinging with their eyes closed.’
